The Dishes Are Gonna Be There When We Get Back

Them Dishes Are Gonna Be There When We Get Back

A Fast-Paced Life –The world is full of people who are rushing.  I am incredibly active in my daily life, but I am also at the age where I know my days are numbered.  At some point, you begin to realize that all that rushing means your life is out of control.  Your spiritual and family life starts to go down the drain….along with your health.

If we should be joyful (how many times does the bible talk about joy)  and if God and Family come first, then the rest should fall in place….when your life is upside down, everything around you is upside down as well.

Somehow we have to analyze our life and time and make decisions for the long haul and the short-haul.

I love “The One Thing”; it is something I learned years ago in Sales Training.  There are usually only a few things you can focus on at a time, and to really become the best, you choose “The One Thing” that you identify and can measure as the most important thing you need to change, perfect your One Thing to make it a habit.

As with any new habit, the One Thing usually takes about 21 days.  If, however, you can focus on that One Thing, let’s say as a part of your daily job where you repeat this “one thing,” many times a day, you may complete your One Thing is much less time.

Now you have created a new Habit, and you can move on to the next One Thing.  There is more to One Thing, such as measuring your One Thing.

Making Change

You may have little control over your work hours, but you can control your off time, family time hours.

While I love organization, a nice clean area around me, flowers out the front door, and or back door, there are typically only a few things in life that are most important.  Or should be.

When you have children, your house might be more of a “mess,” and when the children leave, all of a sudden, everything has its place.

When Andy and I first starting dating, he saw the laundry ALL over the hall floor; the laundry was on the 2nd floor; we laugh that it did scare him!

I had the best intentions, the kids and I would put the clothes in little piles, and then the sun would come out.  Ok, if the sun comes out in Ohio, you run like crazy for the car.  Ok, kids, let’s go for a drive and get ice cream!  Hahaha.

Not long ago, a woman came into my home to measure for window treatments and commented on how organized the house was, nothing out of place…..she actually said.

Today, little is out of place, and the children are grown and gone.  There are only two of us.  It is far easier for everything to have a “place” when there are only two.  There are days I would trade an organized house for a couple of kids.  Time passes quickly.

I am told my grandmother would look at the dishes in the sink on her way out the door and say, “The dishes are gonna be there when we get back.”

Although, I never heard her say that, I can hear her saying it. Because it’s true. Sometimes your One Thing is the time you spend with your children. The dishes and laundry can wait, but the children cannot.

“The dishes are gonna be there when we get back, and so will the laundry.”

“I am in a hurry to get things done”

What’s the Back Story?

I was searching through some of my sales stories on leadership and found this story, it seems to fit our lives today.

Savor the moments you have with your children; time passes quickly.  Today, we have a lot of confusion around us.  It is tough to understand that today becomes yesterday faster than you will ever know.

20 years ago becomes a memory, 30 years ago, becomes a dream.  And the next thing you know, that 20-year-old or 30-year-old is a whole other person.  You see life through different eyes.  And you should, that is called Growth.

Here is a 3 minute cut from “City Slickers” on The One Thing. Watch until the end, the best is at the end it is worth the 3 minutes.

The One Thing

What to Write About? Writing Prompts

  • What stops you in your tracks and reminds you it is time to focus?
  • Or Slow down?
  • Maybe looking at your children or grandchildren?
  • Feeling the hand of someone you love?
  • Missing the hand of someone you love?

Write about your Cherished memories, and share with your children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, family friends.

Someday, someone will be glad you did.
